What theological student wants to work hard at understanding the mind of God in light of 2000 years of attacks upon and good thinking about him? Just give me the ticket for ministry and let me get on with it; there’s a rush on out there, and it is my job to get among it!
Thanks for your challenging post, Peter. The thinking reflected in what you are criticising elevates human activity over the sovereignty of God, and may also expose a motive that seeks our own glory and success rather than the glory of God.
Any push to bypass a rigorous theological education is disastrous! And we who have long since completed our formal education need to remain faithful as teachers, keeping abreast of new challenges we face and how to deal with them. That is only possible when we devote ourselves to a lifetime of the careful study of the Scriptures and an awareness of what people have said and are saying about God, the Bible, his church etc.
Thanks again, Peter
I don’t know where you meet these students, though Peter…
I presume you mean, Mike, you don’t know where the people who spread the rumours meet these students (see line 1)??
If so, I agree, where are they? If they are not out there, then the rumours are scurrilous and should cease forthwith! (... still less act as if they are true)
What happens when we take this lesson from the pagan world (which we are part of, and which is a deep part of us) into our Christian world?
