Kids and idolatry: a spot I had to do at church Gordon Cheng

Almost thou persuadest me to do a Children’s Talk.

Terrific, Gordon.

I dunno Gordon, I’ve been pretty pleased with the couple of culture spots i’ve done in my time. Targetted at young adults though. It’s for helping them direct a conversation from film to gospel. My formula is thus:

1. what is the main theme(s) of the movie?
2. what does the movie say about main theme?
3. what does the Bible say about theme?
4. put into sandwich.

For example:
“hey man, have you seen Easy A (most recent movie I’ve seen)? I really liked the main character and how sassy she was! I liked the way the movie explored the idea of reputation, but I think it downplayed it a bit in terms of what we can realistically expect. I think a reputation is important and as a Christian, something that I value as honouring to God.”

Of course, it’s not going to sound exactly like that, but I’ll try hard to get that gist across and it might open up a conversation about Jesus.

And that is the way I do culture spots: as giving others tools to converse about God by bonding over a movie.

Gordo - this is great - permission to reuse? You should blog all of these.

Wayne: Sure, rip it off, that’s what I put it there for.

Kathryn: What you say is good. However, when I see it done frequently and badly, it annoys the tripe out of me. So, like the Free Presbyterians and their attitude to musical instruments, I want to say—let’s just ban these culture watch things altogether.

But I realize that’s an over-reaction.

Incidentally, my use of facebook means that I keep pressing Shift + Enter when I want to start a new paragraph, which is just as annoying to me but almost completely irrelevant.

Our congregation LOVED it! Many thought I was brilliant, until I told them it wasn’t my idea. Many thanks.
